Another good one from John Piper

I have just finished reading This Momentary Marriage, by John Piper.

Those who know me know that I draw much from this pastor's work. Those who know John Piper know that some of his books are very theological (though readable), while others are much more accessible to the average reader. This book lands in the middle. Piper doesn't shirk on depth, but he also is personal and even funny at times. He combines solid biblical foundations for his ideas about marriage, but also speaks in practical terms. Still, it is not so much a how-to as a how-to-be, which is right, since God works on us from the inside out!

Some things that don't show up in a lot of marriage books:

- Noel Piper's foreword. John's wife is honest, brief and inspiring. She admits that marriages swing on pendulums (pendulae?); the key is where your pendulum is attached up top. A great little picture, eh?

- A real understanding of and support for those who are single, noting that this singleness may be the very thing to which God has called you—and with good reason.

- Strong words about divorce and remarriage. Piper admits that his views are in the minority, but he backs up his bravery with Scripture and invites some key questions.

I don't know if you're in the market for an exceptional book on marriage, but I would classify this book as such.
